Steps after a Car Accident

Illinois accident attorney, Illinois personal injury lawyer, Illinois car crash lawyer,Most people will be involved in at least one car accident in their life. Some accidents may be minor, such as a fender bender, and others may be so serious that there are deaths involved. However serious the accident is, everyone wants to make sure they avoid being involved in one altogether. If you or a loved one has been in a car accident, there are some steps that you need to take to successfully handle the situation.

Check for Injuries

The first thing that the person involved in a car accident must do is check for injuries. Someone in the car must call 911 if there are any injuries. If the person was seriously injured, he or she must try hard not to move and wait for emergency personnel to arrive. If there was anyone else in the car at the time of the accident, the other passengers must check themselves for injuries.

Get to a Safe Area

If the accident is not too serious, then it is important for the person involved to drive the car to the side of the road as to allow other drivers the ability to safely pass. If the accident is serious, and the car is unsafe to drive, then it is important to turn on the hazard lights to warn other drivers to slow down.

Call 911 and Document the Accident

It is very important to call 911 after a car accident, no matter how serious the situation. The police officers who respond to the accident will fill out a police report, documenting the scene of the accident. The person involved in the car accident should identify the officers and receive a business card from them, as the person will be able to contact that police officer if he or she has any questions.

It is also important for the person to ask the responding police officer for a copy of the accident report to keep for records. Photos taken of the scene can also be very helpful when documenting the details of the accident, and taking down bystanders’ names can also be useful, so they can have a say in what happened in the accident.

Exchange Information of Each Party Involved

The most important information that each party must have after a car accident include the full name and contact information, insurance company and policy number, location of the accident, and driver and car information. The information should be as detailed as possible. If the information is not taken down at the scene of the accident, then the information should be included in the police report.
